What is Run Walk Talk Therapy ®?
Run Walk Talk Therapy ® is a form of somatic psychotherapy that blends traditional talk therapy with the physical benefits of movement. It allows for the client and therapist to meet outdoors to walk, jog, or run side-by-side at a pace that feels right for the client.
This approach is designed to help clients process emotions, reduce stress, and integrate both mind and body during therapy. No athletic background is required, but clearance by a physician for this type of movement is required.
Benefits of Movement-Based Therapy
-Reduces anxiety and stress because physical movement naturally lowers cortisol levels and boosts endorphins, helping you regulate your nervous system.
-Allows for breaks in emotional blocks because moving forward physically often helps clients feel less “stuck” mentally, making it easier to discuss challenging topics.
-Through talking while walking side-by-side, many individuals find it less intimidating to speak with a therapist instead of direct, continuous eye contact in an office.
-Being outdoors provides natural grounding elements that assist with mindfulness, trauma processing, and depression management.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be a runner or in good shape?
Absolutely not. The physical movement is a tool for the therapy, not a workout. Jen only offers walking in sessions at this time and the pace is dictated by the client. Outdoor therapy can also be utilized without any movement at all where the outdoors offer so many therapeutic benefits.
How is confidentiality handled outdoors?
Confidentiality is a priority. Before our first outdoor session, we will establish a specific plan. If we encounter someone you know or someone I know, we will agree in advance on a simple greeting or strategy to protect your privacy. We also naturally adjust our voice volume or choose paths that offer appropriate spacing from others.
What happens if it rains or snows?
We will check the forecast ahead of time. In cases of mild weather, we can still go out if you are comfortable. But at the beginning of every session the client will decide if they would like to engage in outdoor therapy or not. In cases of extreme weather (heavy rain, lightning, extreme heat or cold), we will remain indoors for safety and comfort.
What should I wear?
Please wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and supportive walking or running athletic shoes if you are choosing to participate in outdoor therapy.
